Review – Dinner Date Australia

July 26, 2011

Dinner Date Australia – Seven – 9:30pm Tuesday – AUS

Sometimes when a show comes along you can see the care and effort that has been put into it. Whether it’s Channel 7 pouring endless promotion and cash into The X Factor, or Channel 10 prepping their audience for The Renovators; whatever you think of those shows it’s obvious that the network had a long term plan in place when they were created. They set out to create a hit series they wanted to be able to milk for years. Then there are the shows that networks think up at the last minute when they suddenly realize they have a hole in the schedule to fill. Shows that pop into the head of some executive who then needs his latest thought turned into a TV show. Shows that haven’t been thought through, shows that combine elements TV executives think people want to see. Shows like Channel 7’s latest brain fart of a reality series Dinner Date Australia.

Dinner Date has a lot in common with The Boss Is Coming To Dinner from last year; both were quickly put together series about a person going to three people’s houses to eat dinner, and they were both put to air by a channel who bought a British reality series simply because it included cooking. This is cheap trash TV, if you were a viewer tuning in to see romance, cooking or host Manu Feildel – the three things advertised by Channel 7 – you would have been sorely disappointed. There was one single attractive single mum, Simone, and she did go on dates with three guys who all cooked her dinner, but there was no romance, the cooking was quickly brushed over and as for Manu – was he actually involved in this show at all?

Manu popped up to introduce us to the show, then he disappeared for a while handing the narration duties over to somebody’s whose accent isn’t mostly impenetrable. We then went whole ad breaks without seeing the Dancing With The Stars winner, and you can be sure that the lack of Manu is the one element of the show that Seven is guaranteed to cop a lot of flack for. You can see more of Manu in that picture above than you get to see him in Dinner Date, so why was he front and centre in the advertising campaign? The show was obviously put together, and Manu was brought in at the last minute to record a couple of crosses and cash a paycheque. Dinner Date is pretty crappy in its own right, but this is shameless behaviour and it’s hard to see how Channel 7 think they can get away with it.

The ratings should be solid for the first night but that can be attributed to the massive Australia’s Got Talent audience giving Dinner Date a chance, but they will not be there next episode. Cheap reality TV is okay when it has that train wreck element that people can’t look away from (think Jersey Shore) but Dinner Date is far too dull to be any kind of ‘guilty pleasure’. This is an insufferably boring show; the conversations are boring, the food is boring, and it drags on for an hour when it should have been trimmed down to an easy to digest thirty minutes. On top of that the supposed star of the show, Manu, isn’t remotely involved in the show, he doesn’t cook the meals, or offer the guy’s advise, or do anything except deliver some lines that were obviously shot well after the rest of the program was in the can.

The show is strung together with non-Manu delivered cheesy narration that involves freezing the frame, rewinding footage, record scratches, but somehow manages to completely lack a personality. The narration only ever gets a chance to bore us when a pop song isn’t playing over the top of the footage. This is such a baffling mess, the sort of crap you’d expect Channel 9 to pull but is still somewhat surprising to see a top rated network like Seven try to get away with. There’s no point watching Dinner Date Australia, not only is it a worthless television program but it won’t last longer than three weeks before it’s cancelled.

I though it was the biggest loser, because that’s who she chose for a second date. What a sleeze bag and she fell for it! Says a lot about her. I really liked her until her final decision…..anyhow it got me talking and no doubt I will watch next episode. Well done CH7

“Girl chooses the guy she most wants to bonk” is more accurate. He’s also a total playa, and probably already has a couple of other women on the go

I too lost all respect for her when she made her final choice with that sleaze-bag. I thought she was supposed to be a smart sassy business woman…. pfft….

My thoughts exactly. She says she wants a man on the same track as her and wants to settle down, then disappoints everyone by choosing the biggest wanker. She deserves to be single because she is obviously just a very shallow person whose mainly interested in superficial looks and big bank accounts! Good luck with your son Guiseppe!!!!!

Sleazy dirty try-hard wog. Acts all rich, tough and a ‘ladies man’. Probably drives a luxurious car to make up for his lack of size and ability in the bedroom.
Whats the bet there isnt a third date?

I thought the show looked like it was just thrown up at the last moment. I agree with most of the comments, but if she wants to choose the guy who she felt most chemistry with then thats her choice, even if he is a douche bag. “I want to see her a million percent…. thats a lot”, no s#*t sherlock lol

I actually had low expectations going into watching this show, however it was quite entertaining. I thought she was going to choose the last fella with the kid, but looks like she fell for the sleazeball’s playa tricks. Now I can understand how she had already been married and had a kid with another bloke,

Another smart woman dumb with men. I would have run as fast as I could from the controlling sleaze bag she chose, and especially with a child to consider too.

I also agree.. I was absolutely DUMBFOUNDED when she chose that freaken loser! I wanted her to pick the first guy, my husband wanted her to choose the 3rd guy coz he was (let’s face it) A LOT more suited to her. They got along really, really well. I thought to myself “Nah, she can’t be that stupid as to choose that god damn idiot” but boy was I wrong lol. He IS probably sleeping with other people and who the hell wants a guy with an ego THAT big? She said herself “Chemistry has to grow” then turns around and says “I chose him because we had chemistry from the get go” She said herself (if I recall correctly) that the person she chooses doesn’t have to be hot! URGH…. I’d kill myself before I hooked up with that pathetic freaken douche bag! She clearly only wants to bang him… that relationship will NOT last. She won’t be able to put up with him for that long.

Well come on, lets be fair. She had to pick one guy to spend time with OVERNIGHT.
Regardless of what she’s looking for down the track in a relationship, she has to be stuck overnight with one of those guys as per the rules. Assuming it actually happens off-camera, she’s going to choose the one she can enjoy bonking. End of story.
Of course, she’s going to spin some BS about “chemistry” and “relationships” to make it all sound above-par for your family audience.
Better yet, the guy she chose is a playboy anyway. She definitely doesn’t have to marry him, and she can just use him for sex in relative safely. The other two guys (especially the first) would probably fall in love hard and harass her afterwards if she hooked up with them.

I think the show provides some very accurate insight into the state of our social situation. Fascinating!

Totally agree TJB. It’s scary isn’t it? Woman says one thing and then does another – that is the exact opposite. No wonder men say they can’t figure us out :) We’re not exactly doing our gender any favours when we do stuff like this!!

Some programmes make me want to turn the TV off and go and read a book. I saw a PROMO for this ‘show’ and turned the TV off! I’m now almost on first-name terms with the staff at the library.

  17. July 29, 2011 12:35 am

lol @ Marc, the guy must have practiced his moves, what a sleazebag. Highlight of the show for me was Manu saying ‘Simone’ in the breaks haha

Marc’s not a sleazebag, as much as he understands that most women enjoy no-strings-attached sex as much as the next person, and is simply catering to that with consenting adults.

Admittedly the show (and society at large) wants to make us all believe a Disney stereotype that women want relationships and stability, and that men should cater to that (by cooking supposedly?!). However, if my experience is anything to go by, that’s simply not true!

I missed the last part of the show so I missed her making her choice. I expected her to go with the Italian Stalion because she was attracted to the idea of him before she even met him. Personally I think he was putting on the macho man image for the show. The first and the last men were too nice and as she didn’t expect to end up with any of them long term she chose the one who she wouldn’t hurt. I think she is smarter that you have all given her credit for.

@gg hahahahaha i think FW will be pretty cut. Jeremy is sooo not going to act like his true character on this show. I cant wait to watch it as I thought that this show was never going to go to air

marc is hot and looks rich and smart……. hes a winner……. of course she’d choose him, the first 1 was nervous, the 3rd looked like a serial killer

Thought it was hilarious that AJ chooses the girl with the worst cooking. There goes the premise of the entire show! The girl was so tall compared to him, it looked like she could have ground him into a pulp. He didn’t even make a move on her…. why? Better to try and risk getting slapped than not try at all!

  25. August 10, 2011 12:23 am

I think AJ kinda rude & blunt. Nicki was right when she said “NO”. Erin would be shocked if she heard his comment “like p**” about her dinner. Btw, Michelle might be his match :P

Kinda rude – i’d say a total pig. If someone spends their time preparing a meal for me I certainly would not be critical of it. If this is indicicative of the blokes out there why am I single!? I sometimes wonder how real these shows are….

I hope this show is gone asap, what a disgrace! Manu? what are you doing attached to such trash? I stumbled on this show and was gob smacked, AJ, what a creep with no manners, licks his plate, not just once as a mistake, maybe that what he does instead of washing up? Belly dancing what the? what a parade, I was so embarrassed to watch that. Please girls have faith in the universe to find you Mr right, do lower yourselves to this.

I think Manu is *trying* to coach the men/women in the series to cook, but Masterchef this ain’t! The last girl looked at the oven in her house as if it had never been there before and had recently appeared out of nowhere, then didn’t know how to switch it on!
AJ sneaks into her fridge, hates the food, and then wants to spend time with her? Try thinking with your big head, not the little head buddy!

The show is basically a parody of itself.
